On Friday, June 22 Mayor Gray signed into law the “The Youth Bullying Prevention Act of 2012”. This expansive new law aims to eliminate bullying in schools, public libraries, parks, recreation centers and other public spaces.
The law establishes an Anti-Bullying Task Force composed of District agencies and community advocates, school staff and students and charges it with creating a comprehensive model policy to be used as a framework for agencies adopting anti-bullying policies. The law also protects those who report bullying incidents from retaliation and requires incidents be addressed in a developmentally appropriate manner.
Advocates for Justice and Education is a member of the Task Force and was at the signing ceremony. We look forward to working with our community partners, city officials and agency representatives to ensure that any policy that is passed will provide the training and support necessary to ensure success. We understand that bullying is a significant problem for many of our families and we want to make sure that all young people are treated and learn to treat others with respect.
