Call for Applications: Workforce Development Center at River Terrace – March 6th
DCPS Workforce Development Center at River Terrace Education Campus is recruiting eligible applicants for SY 2019-2020. Through the Workforce Development Center (WDC), students will receive specialized training in the areas of Horticulture, Health Services, and Hospitality. Students will receive instruction through workforce development curricula, independent living and career skills. The program exists to prepare participating students for competitive employment in the community.
Candidates must:
Be age 18 – 21, C4 and above
Be pursuing a certificate of IEP Completion, and identified in their IEP Diploma Decision status
Express desire to attend the Workforce Development Center at River Terrace
Have participated in a community-based work experience and transition courses at student’s home school
Demonstrate a need for intensive employment and independent living skills instruction, per student’s transition plan
Participate in an interview with staff, and tour the Workforce Development Center at River Terrace
Have the mobility and stamina to perform some workplace tasks with support and accommodations
Be willing to utilize public transportation independently, including Metro Access (free travel training is provided)
Be able to pass a drug screening and criminal background check
Call for Applications: Direct Support Professional Academy – February 28th
We are looking for recent and soon-to-be high school graduates to join our second cohort of the ‘Direct Support Professional’ Academy. This academy will provide youth (ages 18+) the skills and certifications needed to be hired as Direct Support Professionals. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are people who work directly with people with physical disabilities and/or intellectual disabilities with the aim of assisting the individual to become integrated into his/her community. The DSP Academy aims to provide participants exposure to a variety of career paths within the Health and Human Services sector, and offers the short-term option of securing employment as a DSP post-graduation.
The academy will take place for eight weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM beginning on March 24th. The academy will take place at RCM of Washington’s headquarters located at 64 New York Avenue NE Suite 100, Washington DC 20002. Our office is located within the ‘People’s Building’, and is easily accessible by the WMATA Red Line Metro at NOMA/Gallaudet.
All applicants should be highly interested in securing employment upon completion of the academy. All applicants must meet the following application criteria:
Pass a drug screen, criminal background check and TB test.
Must be able to lift weights of at least sixty (60) pounds.
Competent with basic computer literacy and able to complete daily documentation.
Be a participant in the DCPS Career Bridge program, or have an IEP, 504 plan or be eligible for services with the Department on Disability Services/Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA).
Have recently graduated or be on course to graduate at the end of the semester (June 2020).
Be between the ages of 18 and 22 years old by 07/31/2020.
Be eligible to work in the United States.
Have previously exhibited appropriate behavior and social skills in school and/or the workplace.
Be comfortable assisting others with personal care.
Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm with people.
Must be able to obtain a health certificate endorsed by a physician.
Must be comfortable navigating the DC Metro area using public transportation, driving is a plus.
Have all immunizations up to date.
Follow RCM of Washington’s dress code and be suitably groomed during work hours.
Willing to attend all DSP Academy sessions.
An information session will be held on Thursday, March 12th from 4:00pm – 5:30pm at RCM of Washington.
Call for Applications: DC3C Alternate Spring Break – April 13th – 17th
Applications for Alternate Spring Break Program 2020 are now open. Please encourage students to apply early.
Alternate Spring Break Program is a week-long (April 13th – 17th, 2020) job-readiness “boot camp.” Over the week, students will participate in workshops to master the skills they need to obtain competitive, integrated employment. This year, we are happy to announce that the Department of Employment Services (DOES) will be working with us to assist students in authentic interviews for possible MBSYEP 2020 worksite placements. It’s a great event and students who participate do make statistically significant gains in their interviewing skills.
Students with disabilities (ages 16-21; eligible for IEP/504 plan) from across DC Public Charter High Schools are invited to apply. There are 40 slots available. Students who have been the most successful in the past are students who want to work and need transitional support in navigating the interview process to obtain employment.
