Are you a DCPS parent who wants more information about your child’s self-contained classroom? DCPS’ guides (below) are a good place to start to learn more so you can make well-informed decisions.
You can find the 2023/24 DCPS list of self-contained classroom locations at their website.
AJE is also glad to be able to share DCPS Staff Guidebooks and Manuals (below) with parents, families, and other interested parties. We obtained these after a Freedom of Information request we filed as part of our work to create more transparency in public education in the District of Columbia. The DCPS guidebooks we obtained are listed are linked to below:
Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Guidebook
School Mental Health-Social Work Provider Guidebook
School Psychology Program Guidebook
Speech and Language Program Guidebook
Missed Related Services and Untimely Assessment Guidelines
The guidebooks provide insight into how members of IEP teams are to conduct IEP meetings and fulfill their required responsibilities to students with disabilities, and in the case of the self-contained classroom guides, what those programs’ goals are. This information is essential to these students and their families as they navigate the special education decision-making process.
We believe that access to these documents promotes collaboration between DCPS and families by ensuring that all parties have the same expectations about their roles and obligations. Parents will be able to better familiarize themselves with the special education process and how the professionals tasked with supporting students with disabilities are meant to do their work.
